Shooting Archetypes: How College Scoring Profiles Predict WNBA Value

We classified 4.2 million NCAA shots into three scoring archetypes and tested them against 83 current WNBA players. Two paths produce star-level value. The third produces role players.

Can you look at how a player scores in college and predict how much she'll contribute in the WNBA? That's what we wanted to find out.

We started with 4.2 million shots across five NCAA seasons (2021–22 through 2025–26). From that, we built a system that classifies every D1 player into one of three scoring archetypes based on where she scores and how she draws fouls. Then we tested the archetypes against 83 current WNBA players using their college shooting data and identified the benchmarks that separate productive WNBA players from the rest.

A note on what this is and isn't. This is not a draft board. It doesn't account for athleticism, defense, rebounding, playmaking, or any of the other things that make a player a prospect. It's a lens: one dimension of a player's game, measured against the shooting profiles of current WNBA players. A player who clears every benchmark has a scoring profile that looks like a productive WNBA player's college profile. A player who misses one might still be a better overall prospect for reasons this system doesn't capture. Eventually, scoring profiles can be combined with those other dimensions to build something more predictive. This is an early step, and we think an interesting one.

This article explains how the classification works. Parts two and three apply it to current prospects.

The Three Scoring Levels

Every scorer operates at some combination of three levels. We measure each as a rate relative to field goal attempts:

A player “hits” a level if she exceeds the threshold. The thresholds are intentionally low. We're not asking “is she elite at this?” but “does she do this at all?” A 15% three-point attempt rate means roughly one in seven field goal attempts is a three. A 20% free throw rate means she draws fouls at a meaningful clip. Each level is a box to check. The more boxes a player checks, the harder she is to guard.

Three Archetypes

The three levels produce three archetypes. A player who checks all three boxes is a Scoring Threat. A player whose offense runs through the paint without a perimeter game is Interior Presence. A player missing at least one level is a Specialist. That's the entire system. The groupings emerge from the data, and they hold up against WNBA outcomes.

Offense runs through the paint with no meaningful three-point threat. This isn't just post players. Guards and wings who attack the rim but don't shoot threes land here too. What matters is the shot profile, not the position.

Narrower offensive identity. Most are perimeter shooters who don't get to the rim or the free throw line at meaningful rates. Some have two skills but lack foul-drawing ability. Role-player ceiling in the WNBA, with rare exceptions.

The WNBA Test

We classified 83 current WNBA players by their college shot splits and checked their WNBA production using our PAR model. “Contribution” is a composite of shooting value, rebounding, assists, and steals. Higher is better.

Two paths to high WNBA value, one path to role-player production. Scoring Threats and Interior Presence both average above 10 contribution points but get there differently. Scoring Threats spread value across shooting, assists, and steals. Interior Presence players dominate the boards. Specialists produce about half as much (5.5), with one notable exception we'll get to.

Part of this is minutes. Versatile scorers and dominant bigs earn more playing time, which inflates per-game contribution. A Scoring Threat averaging 30 minutes has more opportunity to produce value than a specialist getting 18 off the bench. The system doesn't separate “she's better” from “she plays more because she's more versatile.” Both are probably true, and they're hard to untangle. But the signal is still useful: college players who check all three boxes tend to become WNBA players who stay on the court.

Which College Metrics Predict WNBA Production

Within each archetype, not all college metrics matter equally. We correlated each college efficiency metric against WNBA production to find what separates the players who produce at the next level from those who don't, then used those correlations to weight the prospect rankings and set the benchmarks below.

For Scoring Threats, volume and efficiency both predict WNBA production, with volume slightly more important. A player taking 18 shots per game at 45% outprojects a player taking 10 at 48%. Three-point accuracy, field goal percentage, and free throw percentage all carry significant weight.

For Interior Presence, getting to the line separates WNBA starters from bench bigs. FG% matters less because nearly all Interior Presence players shoot well from the paint. The ones who draw fouls create more total value because free throws are the most efficient shot in basketball.

For Specialists, the strongest signal is finishing inside the arc. Specialists who can finish at the rim in addition to shooting threes produce more at the next level. Pure shooters with no inside game have the lowest WNBA ceiling in the dataset.

WNBA Benchmark Thresholds

Using the correlation data, we set benchmarks at the top-half WNBA level for each metric within each archetype. These become the passing grades used in Parts 2 and 3 to flag college prospects who match WNBA success patterns.

A player who clears all benchmarks for her archetype doesn't guarantee WNBA success. But she has the efficiency profile that historically produces it. In Parts 2 and 3, we display these as match flags next to each prospect.

Scoring Threat

The largest group (41 of 83 WNBA players) and the highest average contribution. These players checked all three boxes in college: rim, perimeter, and line. The top of this list reads like an All-Star ballot.

Clark and Bueckers look different on tape but classify the same way: both exceeded the thresholds at all three levels. Clark was perimeter-heavy (52% three-point rate) while Bueckers was more balanced. Rickea Jackson barely cleared the perimeter threshold at 15.4%, but her rim finishing and foul-drawing made her a clear three-level profile. Morrow and Rice get to the basket on nearly half their attempts while still checking the other two boxes.

The archetype captures offensive versatility regardless of where the emphasis falls. Within the group, some lean heavily on the three-point line, others live at the rim. The system doesn't distinguish between them because the WNBA data doesn't either. Both styles have produced high-value WNBA players at similar rates.

Interior Presence

Twenty-eight players, averaging 10.5 contribution. These players are rim-dominant with no meaningful perimeter game. The group includes post players, forwards, and guards whose college offense ran through the paint rather than the three-point line.

The group spans a wide range of playing styles. Boston (54.8% FG) and Cardoso (57.2%) score through touch and positioning. Austin (46.0% FG) and Reese (50.0%) create value through volume and aggression. What they share is a rim-dominant shot profile with no meaningful three-point game.

Reese is the signature example: 76% layup rate, 58% free throw rate, zero three-point threat. In college she was a pure interior player. In the WNBA she's the 8th most valuable player, primarily through rebounding. Shot data identifies the archetype but can't capture everything that makes it work at the next level. Rebounding, defensive presence, and physical tools all matter for Interior Presence players, and none of that shows up in a shot chart.

Specialist

Fourteen players, averaging 5.5 contribution. These players had a narrower offensive identity in college. Most are perimeter shooters who didn't get to the line or the rim at meaningful rates. A few had two skills but lacked foul-drawing ability.

Azzi Fudd is the exception at 18.0 contribution. Remove her and the group averages 4.5. Specialists can carve out long WNBA careers, but their ceiling is role-dependent. They need a team context that maximizes their one skill.

Raven Johnson is an interesting case. She was a top-10 pick in the 2025 draft but classified as a Specialist because she rarely got to the line in college (14.6% FT rate). She had rim and perimeter but not line. Through 34 games, her 5.2 contribution puts her in the back half of first-round picks. That might change as she develops foul-drawing ability. But the archetype flagged the risk.

What the Archetypes Miss

This system measures one dimension of basketball: how a player creates scoring opportunities for herself. It says nothing about defense, athleticism, passing, basketball IQ, or intangibles. Some of the best WNBA players would not score particularly well here because their value comes from elsewhere.

The classification also has survivorship bias. We're only looking at players who made the WNBA. Plenty of Scoring Threats in college never got drafted. Checking all three boxes is necessary but not sufficient. What the data shows is that among players who do reach the WNBA, those who scored at all three levels in college tend to produce the most value. That's a useful signal for prospect evaluation, not a complete one.

What's Next

This article established the framework, validated it, and identified which efficiency metrics predict WNBA production within each archetype. The next two parts apply those benchmarks to the college landscape.

Part 2 ranks every major-conference prospect using WNBA-benchmarked scoring. Instead of just sorting by shot distribution, we weight the efficiency metrics that correlate with WNBA value and flag prospects who clear the top-half benchmarks above. 237 major-conference players qualify as Scoring Threats, but efficiency separates the top of the list from the crowd.

Part 3 profiles small-school standouts with zone-based shot charts and WNBA player comps. Five of the top non-P5 Scoring Threats from our model were independently recruited by P5 programs, validating the approach. Shot profiles don't care about conference affiliation, and neither does the WNBA.
